What is your business all about? What do you sell/do?
Sugar Beet Food Co-op is a community owned store that sells a wide variety of local and organic foods. The Co-op is a unique shopping experience with a cafe with juices, smoothies, coffee and local pastries plus a huge bulk department that includes everything from organic spices to bulk dish soap. Our customers value our commitment to small local producers and earth friendly practices like composting.
How long have you been in business?
It will be ONE year on July 31st!
Why did you decide to open in Oak Park?
Sugar Beet Food Co-op was built by many volunteers in the Oak Park Community and the Co-op had the support of the Village of Oak Park from the very beginning. Oak Park is home to many optimistic, creative and earth loving people who wanted an independent grocery store that reflected their commitment to supporting local farmers and producers- who serve as stewards of our land.
What would locals be surprised to hear about you, your business or your inventory?
Our Grocery and Produce Managers, Stephen and Zach, wear kilts each and every Sunday to work. They brought this tradition with them from their work at a food co-op in Sierra Vista, Arizona and the tradition continues!
